If you are interested in commissioning me then please have a read of my process below and do let me know if you have any questions or enquiries though my Contact page.

Reference photos

Considering the subject matter (animals and young children) I do not expect to work from life. Where I cannot come and take my own reference photos, I rely upon being provided with well-lit (natural light), high resolution photographs. You can send me as many as you like and do let me know if you have any particular favourites.

Mediums

Charcoal portraits are drawn on Strathmore grey or sand toned paper, with additional white pastel. From agreeing the reference photo to completion takes roughly two weeks.

Oil portraits are painted on stretched canvas or canvasboard. I will do 1-3 sketches based on initial reference photos and then, from agreeing the composition to completion with an initial layer of varnish, it can take six to eight weeks or longer, depending on size.

Prices and sizes

Exact quotes are based upon subject, medium, size and complexity, ie background, so the below is a merely a guide. Portrait sizes start at 14" x 10" and small pet portraits from 8" x 10".

Portraits

  • Charcoal 14" x 10" head and shoulders from £240

  • Oil 14" x 10" head and shoulders sketch from £420

Pet portraits

  • Oil head and shoulders from £200 (8”x10”)

Extras: Framing, Mounting and Postage

The right frame really does enhance a picture as well as protect it for the future. This is a distinctly personal decision, taking into account the room it may hang in for example, among other considerations, so I do not quote for it unless specifically requested.

If your charcoal picture is to be presented as a gift then I would recommend having a simple mount and backing for presentation purposes and can offer this for £10.

Where I am unable to hand deliver the commission, then it is packaged and sent by Royal Mail first class tracked delivery and charged at cost.
